Where it came from
Sinbad: The Magic Lamp and the Moving Islands was released in 2016 as the third and final installment in a theatrical trilogy produced by Nippon Animation. Created to commemorate the studio's 40th anniversary, the series was designed to introduce younger generations to the legendary tales of Sinbad the Sailor. The production sought to capture the spirit of classic adventure storytelling while utilizing the studio's rich history of character-driven animation.
The visual direction for the film was spearheaded by character designer and animation director Yoshiharu Sato, a veteran of Studio Ghibli. Sato aimed for a warm, hand-drawn aesthetic that felt reminiscent of traditional cel animation, moving away from the heavy digital reliance seen in contemporary studio films. Upon its release, the trilogy was praised by critics for its nostalgic charm and the consistency of its artistic vision, serving as a heartfelt tribute to the studio's long-standing legacy in the Japanese animation industry.
