Where it came from
Sousei no Aquarion EVOL, released in 2015 as a special collection, serves as a high-definition anthology and commemorative set celebrating the 2012 sequel to the original 2005 Aquarion series. Produced by studio Satelight, the collection was conceived to consolidate the high-octane mecha action and the complex, emotive storytelling that defines the franchise. It focuses on the recurring themes of reincarnation, the elemental powers of the pilots, and the iconic, multi-part transformation mechanics that allow the titular robots to combine and reconfigure during combat.
The aesthetic direction of the EVOL series, overseen by director Shoji Kawamori, emphasizes fluid character designs and intricate mechanical detail. Kawamori, a veteran of the mecha genre, sought to balance the gravity of the series' philosophical narrative with the dynamic, colorful choreography of its aerial battles. Upon its release, the special edition was received as a definitive retrospective for fans, noted for its polished visual presentation and its contribution to the legacy of the Aquarion universe, further cementing its status as a staple of contemporary super robot anime.
