Where it came from
Star Fleet, known in Japan as X-Bomber, was produced in 1980 by Knack Productions. It is a distinctive work of tokusatsu puppet drama that utilized a specialized filming technique known as SFW, or Star Fleet Water, which involved the manipulation of intricate puppets against elaborate miniature sets to mimic the aesthetic of space opera science fiction.
The series gained significant international recognition after being dubbed and broadcast in the United Kingdom in the early 1980s, where its unique visual style and electronic score left a lasting impression on a generation of viewers. While the puppet-based format was an unconventional choice for the time, it showcased a dedicated craftsmanship that allowed for a level of kinetic action that set it apart from traditional animation.
