Steel Angel Kurumi Encore

Steel Angel Kurumi Encore was released in 2000 as a four-episode original video animation series, serving as a direct follow-up to the 1999 television anime Steel Angel Kurumi. Produced by OLM, the series continues the story of Kurumi, a bishōjo android created during the Meiji era who is awakened by a young boy named Nakahito. The production team aimed to transition the narrative from its initial comedic and action-oriented roots toward a more focused exploration of the characters' interpersonal dynamics, maintaining the aesthetic hallmarks of the late 90s magical girl and mecha subgenres.

The character designs were handled by Kazuhiro Soeta, who sought to refine the visual style established in the first season while leaning into the transition of the millennium's animation trends. The show was received by audiences as a lighthearted expansion of the franchise, though it occupies a niche space in the history of OLM's catalog. Its design reflects the era's experimentation with mixing historical settings with science fiction elements, and it remains a documented entry in the broader trend of spin-off OVAs that were prevalent in the Japanese animation industry at the turn of the century.
