Steel Angel Kurumi

Steel Angel Kurumi emerged in 1999 as a late-nineties foray into the 'steel maiden' subgenre of anime, produced by the studio OLM. It was developed during a period when the aesthetic of mechanical, humanoid beings paired with emotional, human-like relationships was gaining significant traction in Japanese animation, blending elements of science fiction, historical drama set in the Taisho era, and romantic comedy.

The character design, characterized by the ornate, doll-like appearance of the titular Kurumi, was crafted to evoke a sense of nostalgic fragility contrasted with high-concept combat capability. The series was met with a modest reception upon its initial television broadcast, eventually spawning a franchise that included sequels and spin-offs, maintaining a dedicated following among enthusiasts of the turn-of-the-millennium mechanical girl aesthetic.
