Steel Angel Kurumi Zero

Steel Angel Kurumi Zero was released in 2001 as a three-episode original video animation series, serving as a prequel to the original 1999 television anime. Produced by OLM, the project aimed to explore the origins of the titular character, Kurumi, providing context for her creation and the specific circumstances surrounding the Steel Angel program. The series shifted the tone slightly from its predecessor, emphasizing a more self-contained narrative arc that delved into the mechanical and emotional foundations of the androids before the events of the main series.

The character design for the series drew heavily from the established aesthetic of Kaishaku’s original manga, balancing the iconic mecha-girl silhouette with the softer, character-driven art style prevalent in late 90s and early 2000s Japanese animation. By focusing on the emotional development of the prototype units, the production sought to humanize the concept of artificial intelligence. While it was received primarily by the existing fan base of the franchise, it remains a notable example of the era's trend toward expanding lore through supplemental OVA releases.
