Where it came from
Stratos 4 Advance was released in 2005 as a continuation of the Stratos 4 franchise, which centered on a group of young pilots tasked with intercepting incoming meteorites. Produced by Bandai Visual, this six-episode original video animation series was designed to further explore the high-stakes, science-fiction premise established by the original television run and previous specials, emphasizing both the technical aspects of aerospace defense and the character dynamics among the Comet Interceptor trainees.
The series was directed by Takeshi Mori, who sought to refine the visual identity established in earlier installments while maintaining the franchise's balance of mechanical detail and lighthearted character drama. It was received by the audience as a modest follow-up that leaned further into the established tropes of the series, catering primarily to fans who appreciated the specific blend of aviation-themed action and the distinct aesthetic characterized by the works of artist Studio Fantasia.
