Where it came from
Stratos 4 OVA, released in 2004, serves as an extension of the original anime television series produced by Studio Fantasia. Created during a period of mid-2000s interest in military-themed aesthetics combined with character-driven science fiction, the series focuses on a group of young pilots tasked with intercepting meteorites. The OVA episodes were designed to further explore the world-building and character dynamics established in the initial run, maintaining the studio's focus on detailed mechanical designs.
The production leans into the niche subgenre of 'comet-blaster' anime, utilizing a visual style that balances technical aircraft illustration with the distinct character art typical of the era. Studio Fantasia, known for its work on various OVA projects, utilized this format to provide a more focused narrative trajectory than a standard broadcast series allowed. Upon release, the series was received by enthusiasts of aeronautical anime, though it remains a specialized entry within the studio's broader catalog.
