Street Fighter II: Yomigaeru Fujiwara-kyou - Toki wo Kaketa Fighter-tachi

Released in 1995, this educational OVA was produced by Group TAC to promote the Nara Silk Road Exposition. It represents a unique intersection of 1990s Japanese pop culture and historical tourism, featuring the iconic Street Fighter II cast as they are transported back in time to the Fujiwara-kyō capital of ancient Japan. The production was intended to engage younger audiences with local history by integrating familiar gaming iconography into a narrative about cultural heritage and archeological discovery.

The project was designed to serve as a bridge between the global success of the Street Fighter franchise and the preservation efforts of Nara Prefecture. By placing characters like Ryu and Chun-Li in a historical setting, the studio utilized the popularity of the Capcom property to create an accessible, lighthearted entry point for historical education. While it remains a niche curiosity compared to the main fighting game series, it is well-regarded among dedicated franchise collectors for its distinct, era-specific blending of promotional media and anime aesthetics.
