Street Fighter II V

Street Fighter II V was produced by Studio Hibari and directed by Gisaburo Sugii in 1995, emerging during the peak of the franchise's global popularity. The series was designed as a reimagining of the video game's lore rather than a direct adaptation, situating Ryu and Ken as younger travelers encountering various World Warriors across the globe. This creative shift allowed the animation team to explore character dynamics in a more grounded, episodic format, distancing the narrative from the tight structure of the arcade games.

The character designs were handled by Shukou Murase, who adopted a more realistic and mature aesthetic compared to the stylized, muscular proportions found in the source material. By focusing on sleeker silhouettes and more detailed urban environments, the series aimed to bridge the gap between martial arts cinema and traditional anime. Upon its release, it received a polarized reception from fans accustomed to the games, yet it is now frequently cited for its distinct 1990s visual style and its experimental departure from the established Street Fighter canon.
