Where it came from
The Ties That Bind was produced by Studio 4°C for Capcom in 2009 to serve as a prologue to the release of the video game Street Fighter IV. It was released as an original video animation (OVA) included with the Collector's Edition of the game, intended to bridge the narrative gap between Street Fighter II and the events of the fourth mainline entry. The production sought to reintroduce the classic roster to a new generation of players while establishing the core conflict involving the S.I.N. organization.
Directed by Jiro Kanai, the animation style intentionally departed from the traditional 2D aesthetic of previous Street Fighter anime adaptations, opting for a digital look that echoed the game's stylized 3D character models. While it was well-received by fans as a high-quality companion piece to the console release, critics noted that the film functioned primarily as an extended promotional vehicle, focusing more on cinematic combat sequences than complex character development.
