Super Doll★Licca-chan

Super Doll Licca-chan emerged in 1998 as a collaborative effort between the renowned animation studio Madhouse and the toy manufacturer Takara. Created to serve as both an original television anime series and a marketing vehicle for the long-running Licca-chan doll line, the series reimagined the classic character as a magical protector. The narrative shifts the domestic focus of the original toy into the realm of the mahou shoujo, or magical girl, genre, which was experiencing a surge in cultural prominence at the time.

The character designs were handled by the studio’s creative team, who adapted the iconic proportions of the 1967 doll into a more fluid, animated aesthetic suitable for action-oriented sequences. The series was directed by Gisaburo Sugii, who aimed to blend traditional shoujo themes of friendship and courage with the technical polish characteristic of Madhouse productions. While it served primarily as an promotional extension of the toy brand, it is remembered for its distinct visual style that bridged the gap between toy marketing and mid-nineties anime production trends.
