Where it came from
Super Dimension Century Orguss was produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha and animated by Studio Artland, premiering in 1983 as the second installment in the unofficial Super Dimension trilogy. Coming on the heels of the immense success of The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, the series was designed to explore similar themes of interdimensional warfare and transformation, though it adopted a more psychedelic, patchwork aesthetic that distinguished it from its predecessor's cleaner mecha designs.
The character designs were provided by Haruhiko Mikimoto, while the distinctive 'Orgroid' mechanical designs were handled by Kazutaka Miyatake of Studio Nue. The series was created as a vehicle for ambitious animation storytelling, often experimenting with complex narrative structures and high-concept science fiction. While it struggled to reach the widespread cultural phenomenon status of Macross, it has maintained a dedicated following for its unique visual identity and its influence on later mecha anime.
