Superdimensional Romanesque Samy: Missing 99

Superdimensional Romanesque Samy: Missing 99 was released in 1986 as an original video animation, a format that flourished in Japan during the mid-eighties as a direct-to-consumer alternative to television broadcasting. Produced by Pack-In-Video, the project emerged during a period of intense experimentation in the anime industry, where studios sought to capitalize on the home video market by creating standalone stories that leaned into high-concept science fiction and fantasy aesthetics.

The visual design and production were driven by an effort to merge traditional animation styles with the futuristic, sometimes surreal, sensibilities prevalent in 1980s OVA culture. While the title is noted by enthusiasts of the era for its distinct character designs and the imaginative, experimental nature of its narrative, it remains a niche entry in the landscape of early direct-to-video anime, often discussed as a representative example of the bold, unconstrained creative risks taken by smaller studios before the market consolidated in the 1990s.
