Sushi and Beyond: An English Family Eats New Year's

Sushi and Beyond: An English Family Eats New Year's is a specialized television special that functions as a continuation of the popular Sushi and Beyond franchise, based on the autobiographical travelogues of Michael Booth. Following the success of the original series that chronicled a British family's culinary journey through Japan, this 2016 special was produced to capture the specific cultural nuances and festive traditions of the Japanese New Year, known as O-shogatsu.

The production aimed to maintain the gentle, observational tone established in the preceding episodes, focusing on the domestic warmth of holiday preparations and the significance of traditional seasonal foods like osechi-ryori. By highlighting the intersection of English perspectives and Japanese ritual, the special sought to provide an accessible window into local customs for international viewers. It was received as a charming extension of the established documentary style, praised for its focus on the intimate aspects of family life during the holiday season.
