Where it came from
Sushi Ninja was produced by the Japanese studio Genco in 2014 as an original net animation, or ONA, series. The project was created to capitalize on the unique fusion of traditional Japanese culinary culture and the popular historical tropes of the ninja, targeting audiences through online streaming platforms during a period when bite-sized, experimental animation shorts were gaining significant traction in Japan.
The character design and visual direction aimed for a stylized, comedic aesthetic, emphasizing bright colors and exaggerated action sequences to fit the lighthearted narrative. While the series did not achieve widespread critical acclaim or a lasting legacy, it remains a notable example of the niche, whimsical experiments common to the mid-2010s digital distribution landscape.
