With the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games around the corner, there's also a worldwide sushi boom!
But what to do with all the bastardized sushi out there?
The Japanese government's urgent response is to team up with other ruling powers around the world to establish the World Food-culture Conservation Organization (WFCO) to protect and promote authentic local cuisine. And so the WFCO deploys its 9th Division to oversee Japanese cuisine abroad. The 9th Division, a.k.a. Sushi Police, is notorious for their aggressive conduct and they hassle anyone serving unauthentic Japanese food in the U.S., Russia, France, China, etc. They will resort to any means necessary to eliminate bad sushi. Soon they are despised by restaurant proprietors around the world.

Where it came from
Sushi Police was produced by the Fukuoka-based creative studio Koo-Ki and released in 2016 as a satirical anime series. The project was conceived as part of an effort by the Japanese government to promote the international awareness of authentic Japanese cuisine, specifically targeting the global surge in 'incorrect' interpretations of sushi. It was intended to function as a promotional tool with a subversive, comedic edge.
The series was directed and designed by Batten Sasaki, who utilized a distinct, grotesque 3D-CG animation style to emphasize the show's absurdity. By portraying the 'Sushi Police' as an overbearing task force patrolling the globe to police culinary standards, the creators sought to comment on cultural preservation versus global adaptation. Upon its release, it drew attention primarily for its unconventional visual aesthetic and its peculiar position as a state-sponsored commentary on food diplomacy.
