Where it came from
To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Taiko no Tatsujin rhythm game series in 2015, Bandai Namco commissioned Studio Ghibli to produce a commemorative short animation. The project was intended to elevate the franchise’s mascots, Don-chan and Katsu-chan, by placing them within the distinct, hand-drawn aesthetic that defines Ghibli’s legacy. The short served as a whimsical promotional bridge between the gaming world and the studio's celebrated traditional animation style.
The animation features the hallmark visual warmth of Studio Ghibli, prioritizing fluid character movement and lush background art to ground the arcade characters in a storybook-like atmosphere. It was received as a charming curiosity by both gaming enthusiasts and animation fans, highlighting the cultural significance the Taiko no Tatsujin series had achieved within Japan over its decade and a half of operation.
