Taisei Corporation CM: Sri Lanka Expressway

Commissioned by the Taisei Corporation in 2013, this commercial was produced by CoMix Wave Films under the direction of Makoto Shinkai. It was created as part of a series of advertisements highlighting Taisei's international infrastructure projects, specifically focusing on their construction of the Southern Expressway in Sri Lanka. The piece serves as a bridge between the company's engineering efforts and the distinct, emotive aesthetic that defines the studio's animation style.

Shinkai utilized his signature approach to landscape and lighting to capture the spirit of the Sri Lankan landscape, emphasizing the harmony between the new transit artery and the local environment. Much like his feature films, the work prioritizes atmosphere and the human experience of space, aiming to elevate a corporate project into a contemplative visual narrative. It was well-received upon its release, garnering attention for how it managed to make large-scale civil engineering feel deeply personal and evocative.
