Taisei Kensetsu: Bosporus Kaikyou Tunnel

The Taisei Kensetsu commercial for the Bosporus Strait Tunnel was produced by CoMix Wave Films and directed by Makoto Shinkai in 2011. It was commissioned by the Japanese construction firm Taisei Corporation as part of their 'Voice of the Earth' series, which aimed to highlight large-scale civil engineering projects through poetic, high-fidelity animation. The short film focuses on the ambition and technical challenge of constructing an immersed tube tunnel beneath the Bosporus, bridging the continents of Europe and Asia.

Makoto Shinkai, known for his meticulous attention to lighting and atmospheric detail, brought his signature cinematic style to this industrial subject. By blending realistic depictions of engineering hardware with a poignant, character-driven narrative about the workers involved, the short film elevated a standard corporate advertisement into a celebrated piece of animation. It was well-received by audiences and critics alike, marking a significant collaboration that underscored Shinkai’s transition toward the aesthetic perfection found in his later feature-length works.
