Taisei Kensetsu: Vietnam Noi Bai Kuukou

Released in 2014, this animated short was produced by CoMix Wave Films as part of an ongoing series of television commercials commissioned by the Japanese construction firm Taisei Corporation. The film was directed by Makoto Shinkai, who utilized the commercial medium to craft atmospheric, high-fidelity vignettes that emphasize the human element of large-scale civil engineering projects in international settings.

The piece focuses on the construction of the terminal at Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi, Vietnam, depicting the dedicated efforts of local workers and Japanese engineers. Shinkai’s signature visual style—characterized by meticulous attention to light, shadow, and cloud formations—was employed to evoke a sense of global cooperation and progress. Upon its release, it was lauded by audiences for its cinematic quality, successfully transforming a corporate promotional asset into a short, evocative work of narrative animation.
