Where it came from
Released in 1989, Takarajima Memorial: Yuunagi to Yobareta Otoko serves as a companion piece to the 1978 television anime adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. This OVA was produced by Madhouse, the studio responsible for the original series, and acts as a retrospective or summary special that revisits the legacy of the story while bridging the gap between the source material and the animated adaptation.
The animation features the distinct, earnest character designs and adventurous spirit that defined the original series, which was famously directed by Osamu Dezaki. The production was intended for fans who had grown up with the 1978 series, offering a nostalgic look back at the narrative arc of Jim Hawkins and Long John Silver. While it does not expand the original story, it remains a notable example of the era's tendency to celebrate long-running television franchises through high-quality retrospective home video releases.
