A trio of diabolical dragons stirs from eons of slumber deep within the earth. Charging to the surface, they launch a bloody rampage against humanity, feasting on the weak and gaining strength from their hapless victims' souls. It will take the power of ancient god Takegami, the Guardian of Darkness, to vanquish the evil serpent forces. But alas, the mortal body Takegami inhabits belongs to a host reluctant to fight.

Where it came from
Takegami: Guardian of Darkness was produced by J.C.Staff and released in 1990 during a peak era for the direct-to-video original video animation market in Japan. As a dark fantasy title, it reflected the industry's burgeoning interest in supernatural themes and mature storytelling, which allowed animation studios to explore grittier narratives that might not have been suitable for daytime television broadcasts.
The production utilized the distinct aesthetic sensibilities common to late-1980s and early-1990s anime, characterized by intricate character designs and a focus on atmospheric, moody visual compositions. While J.C.Staff was still establishing its reputation at the time, the project served as an example of their commitment to the experimental and genre-focused storytelling that would eventually define their portfolio throughout the following decades.
