Luke fon Fabre, the spoiled son of a noble from the kingdom of Kimlasca-Lavaldear, has been confined inside his father's mansion ever since he was kidnapped seven years ago by a rival country, the Malkuth Empire. Now Luke's memory of the life he led before is missing, and a strange voice, which only he can hear, has been calling out to him ever since. One day while training with his mentor, Van Grants, a strange woman called Tear breaks into the mansion with the sole intent of taking Van's life. During the struggle Luke is transported far from home, along with Tear, and now that Luke has finally gained the freedom he's been dreaming of, what awaits him in the outside world will shatter everything he's ever known about himself.

Where it came from
Tales of the Abyss was produced by the studio Sunrise and released as a television series in 2008, serving as a direct adaptation of the 2005 role-playing game developed by Namco Tales Studio. The anime was created to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Tales franchise, aiming to translate the complex political narrative and character-driven themes of the original game into an episodic format. The project was helmed by director Kenji Kodama, who sought to balance the intricate plot developments of the source material with the limitations of a twenty-six-episode run.
The series was designed to retain the distinct visual aesthetic established by character designer Kosuke Fujishima, whose work is central to the identity of the Tales series. While the animation style was met with mixed reviews regarding its pacing and deviations from the game's combat-heavy experience, the show is recognized for its faithful recreation of the game's world-building and character dynamics. It remains a notable example of the mid-2000s trend of adapting major RPG titles into standalone television series.
