Where it came from
The Skit-fuu Jikan Yokoku 'Score' was produced by Sunrise as a promotional companion to the 2008 anime adaptation of the role-playing game Tales of the Abyss. Released as a special feature, it utilizes the signature 'skit' format iconic to the franchise, where characters engage in humorous, dialogue-heavy side conversations that break the fourth wall to offer commentary or meta-textual previews of upcoming episodes.
The design draws directly from the aesthetic established by the game’s character designer, Kousuke Fujishima, adapting his distinct style for the animated medium. By leaning into the playful and conversational tone of the series' skit system, the short was intended to bridge the gap between the game’s interactive storytelling and the linear narrative of the anime, and it was generally received by fans as a charming, essential addition to the broader Tales of the Abyss viewing experience.
