Where it came from
Tenkuu Senki Shurato was produced by Tatsunoko Production and premiered in 1989, arriving during the height of the popularity of armor-based fantasy anime in Japan. The series was designed to capitalize on the success of similar works that blended contemporary characters with mythological archetypes, specifically drawing heavily from Hindu and Buddhist cosmology to differentiate its narrative from the Greek mythology focus of other shows of the era.
The character and mecha designs, known as Shakti, were integral to the show's identity and merchandising strategy. The project was conceived to support a line of collectable action figures, and the animation focused on high-energy martial arts choreography. While the series maintains a dedicated cult following for its distinct aesthetic and world-building, it was largely overshadowed in the global market by other contemporaneous fantasy titles produced during the late 1980s.
