Where it came from
Tenuto was developed as an educational application by music education platform musictheory.net, designed to bridge the gap between abstract music theory and practical instrumental application. Launched during the rise of mobile learning tools, the app was conceived as a portable companion to the developer’s widely used web-based exercises, focusing on repetitive, targeted drills for ear training, note identification, and chord analysis.
The design philosophy centers on minimalist functionality, prioritizing a clean user interface that eliminates distractions common in academic software. Created by developer Ricci Adams, the app was intended to provide musicians with a low-friction environment for daily practice. It has been consistently received by music educators as a standard supplementary resource, noted for its reliability and its focus on foundational accuracy rather than gamified engagement.
