Tepid Bath

Tepid Bath was produced by the animation department at Tokyo University of the Arts, known as Geidai Animation, as a showcase of emerging talent in the Japanese independent film scene. The film emerged from an environment that prioritizes experimental techniques and non-traditional narrative structures, reflecting the institution's reputation for fostering auteur-driven animation that often blends surrealism with everyday human experiences.

The creative direction behind the project emphasizes a minimalist aesthetic, leaning into atmospheric storytelling rather than conventional animation tropes. By focusing on mundane settings and quiet, contemplative character beats, the creators aimed to evoke a sense of stagnation and internal reflection. Upon its release, the film was received primarily within the circuit of international animation festivals, where it earned praise for its sensitive pacing and the nuanced technical execution typical of the Geidai production style.
