Where it came from
Released in 1975, That is an UFO! The Flying Saucer serves as a foundational short film that introduced the character Grendizer to audiences. It was produced by Toei Animation as part of their Toei Manga Matsuri film festival, a biannual event designed to showcase various anime properties to children in a theatrical setting. The film was created to test market appeal and establish the visual identity of the franchise before the full television series debuted later that year.
The film was directed and storyboarded by Kozo Morishita, who aimed to craft a high-energy science fiction narrative that leaned into the then-popular fascination with extraterrestrial activity and giant robots. Its design aesthetic drew heavily from the super robot genre established by Go Nagai, focusing on bold silhouettes and dynamic action sequences. Upon release, the short was received as an effective promotional piece, successfully building anticipation for the broader UFO Robot Grendizer series that would soon dominate Japanese television.
