Where it came from
That summer there were two of us was produced by Geidai Animation, the prestigious graduate program at Tokyo University of the Arts. The film emerged from a rigorous academic environment that encourages experimental storytelling and highly personal, often hand-crafted aesthetic approaches to animation. It serves as a testament to the institution's commitment to nurturing independent filmmakers who prioritize introspective narratives over mainstream commercial appeal.
The film was created by filmmaker Eimi Kide, who utilized the project to explore themes of identity and transitory relationships. The design language of the work is noted for its delicate, atmospheric rendering, which reflects the melancholic tone of the narrative. Upon its release, it gained recognition within the international festival circuit for its evocative visual style and its ability to convey complex emotional beats through minimalist character interaction.
