The Cat Returns is something of a loose spin-off of "Whisper of the Heart" as it features two characters from that film: Muta (the cat from "Whisper") and the Baron (the cat statue from "Whisper"). There is no other connection between the two movies and this is not a sequel. The story is based on Neko no Danshaku (Baron of Cat) by Hiiragi Aoi.
The main character of the story, Haru, is a clueless, ordinary 17-year-old girl. She has no special abilities and neither is she an extraordinary beauty. When faced with reality, she is unable to make decisions for herself, thus often sways to others' opinions to avoid challenge. One day, Haru saves the life of a cat without considering her own safety. The cat turns out to be the Cat Prince from the Kingdom of Cats, however as a result, Haru is trapped in the world of cats. Can Baron and Muta rescue Haru who has wandered into the world of cats?

Where it came from
The Cat Returns was produced by Studio Ghibli and released in 2002 as part of the studio's Ghibli Short Short project. Initially conceived as a brief promotional film for a theme park attraction featuring cats, the project eventually expanded into a full-length feature directed by Hiroyuki Morita. The narrative serves as a spiritual successor to the 1995 film Whisper of the Heart, focusing on the character Baron Humbert von Gikkingen, a dapper cat figurine that had captured the imagination of audiences in the earlier film.
The design aesthetic for the film deviates from the lush, painterly backgrounds often associated with Hayao Miyazaki, opting instead for a more streamlined, whimsical look intended to evoke the feel of a classic storybook. Hiroyuki Morita was specifically chosen by Miyazaki to direct, marking a rare instance of the studio entrusting a feature to an outside talent. Upon its release, the film was received as a lighthearted, charming fable, praised for its imaginative world-building and its endearing, fantastical take on feline behavior.
