The Case Study of Vanitas

The Case Study of Vanitas, or Vanitas no Carte, originated as a manga series by Jun Mochizuki before being adapted into a two-cour anime series by the renowned animation studio Bones in 2021. The narrative follows a human doctor who treats vampires using a mysterious grimoire, set against a stylized, steampunk-inspired version of 19th-century Paris. The production sought to capture Mochizuki's intricate gothic aesthetic, emphasizing a moody, ornate visual language that contrasts the elegance of the vampire aristocracy with the grittiness of the city's underbelly.

Bones tasked director Tomoyuki Itamura with translating the series' distinct atmosphere to the screen, drawing on his experience with stylized animation to focus on the chemistry between the lead characters. The anime was well-received for its lush art direction, fluid action sequences, and the evocative musical score composed by Yuki Kajiura. Its design approach focused on maintaining the tactile, vintage feel of the original source material while utilizing digital cinematography to enhance the magical effects inherent in the series' world-building.
