The Case Study of Vanitas Part 2

The Case Study of Vanitas Part 2, produced by Studio Bones, serves as the concluding arc of the 2022 television adaptation of Jun Mochizuki’s ongoing manga series. Set in an alternate-history 19th-century Paris, the narrative follows the titular doctor who seeks to cure vampires of a malady known as the curse-bearer phenomenon. The production continues the aesthetic established in the first cour, blending Gothic architectural motifs with the studio’s characteristic fluid action sequences and high-contrast color palettes.

The design and animation direction were led by veteran creative teams at Studio Bones, who sought to capture Mochizuki’s intricate, ornate art style within a serialized medium. By utilizing a mix of traditional cel-shaded character models against complex, painterly backgrounds, the studio aimed to evoke a sense of melancholy and Victorian elegance. Upon its release, the second part was noted for its faithfulness to the source material’s tonal shifts between lighthearted character interactions and darker, psychological horror elements.
