Where it came from
The Diary of Ochibi-san, released in 2023, is a television anime adaptation based on the long-running manga series by Moyoco Anno. The project was brought to the screen by Studio Khara, the production house famously headed by Hideaki Anno, who happens to be the husband of the original author. The series serves as a gentle, observational look at the changing seasons in a fictional town, capturing the whimsical and nostalgic essence of Anno's original ink-wash style artwork.
The production sought to translate the manga's delicate, painterly aesthetic into a fluid animation format, focusing on the titular character Ochibi and his interactions with the local flora and fauna. By utilizing a distinct visual language that mirrors the textures of traditional Japanese art, the studio aimed to evoke a sense of quietude and mindfulness. Upon its release, it was well-received by audiences looking for a meditative alternative to more high-octane anime, praised for its faithful adherence to the tone and philosophy of Moyoco Anno's source material.
