Where it came from
The Fight Between the Snipe and the Clam, or 'Snipe-Clam War,' is a 1963 short animated film produced by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio. It is a quintessential example of traditional Chinese ink-wash animation, a technique pioneered by the studio that sought to capture the ethereal, atmospheric qualities of classic brush-and-ink paintings by animating each frame of ink on xuan paper, a labor-intensive process that required immense artistic precision.
The film was directed by Yu Zheguang, a prominent figure in Chinese animation who utilized the fable from the 'Strategies of the Warring States' to create a visual masterpiece. By focusing on the struggle between a bird and a clam, the filmmakers aimed to illustrate the proverb that when two parties fight, a third party gains the advantage. Upon its release, it was celebrated for its elegant minimalist aesthetic and rhythmic pacing, earning critical acclaim at international film festivals for its innovative departure from Western cell-animation styles.
