Some people revel and play in the rain; others dread it and hide at the first drop. For high school student Takao, a summer shower is a source of artistic inspiration… but when he skips school in order to sketch in a rainy garden, Takao finds an even greater muse in Yukino, an older woman who seems adrift in the world. Despite the difference in their ages and lives, they strike up a comfortable relationship that slowly evolves as they randomly meet in the same garden whenever it rains. But with the rainy season coming to a close, Takao wonders if there's enough time left to put his feelings into actions and words.

Where it came from
The Garden of Words was conceived and directed by Makoto Shinkai, who sought to explore the concept of 'loneliness' and the Japanese tradition of longing for someone in isolation. Produced by CoMix Wave Films in 2013, the film functions as a short-form meditation on an unconventional bond between a high school student and an older woman meeting in a rain-slicked Tokyo park, heavily inspired by classical Japanese tanka poetry.
The film is widely celebrated for its technical mastery, particularly its photorealistic animation of rain and urban greenery. Shinkai utilized a combination of traditional hand-drawn animation and advanced digital compositing to capture the textures of the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. Upon its release, it was lauded by critics for its visual atmosphere and emotional subtlety, cementing Shinkai's reputation as a successor to the lyrical storytelling style established by masters like Hayao Miyazaki.
