The Ideon: A Contact

The Ideon: A Contact was released in 1982 as the first of two feature-length films designed to summarize and conclude the turbulent narrative of the 1980 television series Space Runaway Ideon. Produced by the animation studio Sunrise and directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, the film was created to provide a more definitive conclusion to the story after the original television broadcast was cut short due to low ratings. By condensing the complex plot of the series, Sunrise aimed to offer audiences a cohesive cinematic experience that explored the profound existential and pacifist themes central to the franchise.

The design and narrative tone of the film reflect the darker, more introspective direction Tomino pursued during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Known for his unflinching portrayal of war and human conflict, Tomino worked with character designer Tomonori Ashida to refine the visual language of the series for the big screen. Upon its release, the film was noted for its stark thematic departure from the typical mecha anime of the era, eventually earning recognition as a foundational work that influenced the mature storytelling conventions of later science fiction animation.
