Where it came from
The Ideon: Be Invoked serves as the definitive cinematic conclusion to the 1980 television series Space Runaway Ideon, created by Yoshiyuki Tomino. Following the abrupt cancellation of the original broadcast, this film was produced by Sunrise to provide a conclusive end to the complex narrative. It is widely recognized for its uncompromising, nihilistic tone and its departure from traditional mecha anime tropes, opting for a metaphysical and existential exploration of humanity's potential for self-destruction.
The design of the film's climactic sequences and the cosmic entities involved draws upon the stark, conceptual artistic direction typical of Tomino's work during this period. The animation utilizes the technical capabilities of a feature-film budget to realize the scale of the Ideon's power, reflecting a deliberate effort to visualize concepts of reincarnation and universal renewal. Upon its release, the film garnered a reputation as a challenging piece of science fiction, eventually becoming a cult classic that influenced later dark-themed mecha series.
