Witches once blessed the human race with wisdom and peace. But the Redia Empire's "Gear Expansion" brought about a culture of science that far surpassed magic, and witches were viewed as enemies impeding the progress of civilization. Thus began the witch hunts. One human named Adonis, who was raised by a witch named Chloe, swears revenge against the human race that took his beloved mentor from him. What salvation can be found at the end of a bloodbath fueled by utter despair?

Where it came from
The Kingdoms of Ruin, or Hametsu no Oukoku, began as a manga series by yoruhashi before being adapted into a twelve-episode anime series by Yokohama Animation Lab in 2023. The narrative explores a dystopian conflict between humanity, which has turned toward technological advancement, and a group of beings known as Witches who possess magical capabilities. The series was produced during a period of high output for the studio, aiming to translate the dark, fantasy-driven aesthetic of the source material into a serialized television format.
The production team, directed by Keitarou Motonaga, focused on highlighting the series' grim tone and the protagonist Adonis’s quest for vengeance against the Gear Empire. While the design work aimed to maintain the sharp, intricate visual style of the manga, the series received mixed critical reception, with viewers often noting the divergence in pacing and tone compared to the original print work. It remains a notable example of dark fantasy anime from the 2023 broadcast season, illustrating a recurring theme in contemporary anime regarding the tension between industrialization and supernatural elements.
