Where it came from
The King's Avatar, or Quanzhi Gaoshou, began as a serialized web novel by Hu Die Lan before being adapted into a high-profile ONA series by G.CMay Animation & Film in 2017. Produced during a period of rapid expansion for Chinese animation, the series was designed to showcase the potential of domestic 3D production techniques while catering to the massive domestic interest in esports culture.
The series follows Ye Xiu, a legendary professional gamer who is forced into retirement and begins a comeback from a local internet cafe. The visual direction aimed to blend gritty, grounded realism within the cafe settings with stylized, fluid combat sequences representing the virtual game world of Glory. It was received as a milestone in Chinese digital animation, earning praise for its authentic portrayal of competitive gaming dynamics and character-driven storytelling.
