Where it came from
The Magic of Chocolate is a 2011 original video animation (OVA) produced by SynergySP, an animation studio known for their work on various adaptations within the shōjo manga genre. This short project was created as a promotional tie-in for the manga series of the same name by Rino Mizuho, which ran in the monthly magazine Ciao. The production sought to capture the series' core premise of a chocolatier named Chocola Aikawa who grants wishes through her magical confections, provided the customer pays a price beyond money.
The animation reflects the aesthetic standards of early 2010s shōjo adaptations, prioritizing a soft, ethereal visual style meant to mirror the whimsical yet slightly melancholic tone of the source material. While SynergySP was tasked with condensing the episodic nature of the manga into a standalone format, the OVA was primarily received as a companion piece for established fans of the manga. Its design choices focus on the detailed, intricate illustrations of the sweets themselves, which served as the central motif of Mizuho's work.
