The story takes place in a barren frontier where people trade goods with each other in order to help each other survive. The Kotobuki Squadron are bodyguards for hire, led by a strict but beautiful squadron leader, an unreliable commanding officer, and a true artisan of a crew chief. Alongside pilots who don't lack for personality, they take to the air in dogfights, letting the engine noise of their Hayabusa fighters ring out in the skies.

Where it came from
The Magnificent KOTOBUKI was produced by studio GEMBA and released in 2019, directed by Tsutomu Mizushima with series composition by Michiko Yokote. The series was conceived as an aerial action project heavily emphasizing historical aviation, focusing on the defense of a frontier town by a mercenary squadron of female pilots. The creative team aimed to blend traditional character animation with complex 3D digital dogfights, a technical challenge that required detailed research into the flight mechanics and authentic aesthetics of World War II-era aircraft.
Upon its release, the series was noted for its distinct departure from standard aerial combat tropes, prioritizing the technical nuances of the Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa and other vintage fighters over typical mecha-style tropes. While it garnered attention for its specialized focus on aeronautical realism and the specific chemistry of its protagonist ensemble, it remains a niche entry in the modern anime landscape, appreciated primarily by aviation enthusiasts and fans of Mizushima’s character-driven directing style.
