Where it came from
The Night Beyond the Tricornered Window, known in Japan as Sankaku Mado no Sotogawa wa Yoru, was produced by Studio Zero-G and aired in 2021. It is an adaptation of the supernatural mystery manga series by Tomoko Yamashita, which initially garnered attention for its unique blend of horror, psychological thriller, and boys' love elements. The narrative centers on an unlikely partnership between a bookstore clerk who sees ghosts and an exorcist, exploring themes of manipulation and codependency through a surreal lens.
The anime adaptation aimed to translate Yamashita’s distinct, often unsettling visual style into a dynamic animated format. While the series was highly anticipated by fans of the original manga, it received a mixed critical reception upon release. Viewers and critics often debated the pacing of the narrative and the effectiveness of the digital-heavy aesthetic chosen by the production team, though the show remains a notable entry in the late-night supernatural drama genre for its willingness to subvert traditional character dynamics.
