Where it came from
The Mystic Archives of Dantalian, released in 2011, was produced by Studio Gainax in collaboration with feel. The series is based on a light novel series by Gakuto Mikumo and serves as a darker, atmospheric contribution to the fantasy genre, focusing on bibliophilia and supernatural mysteries. It emerged during a period where Gainax was exploring diverse narrative styles, aiming to blend gothic aesthetics with episodic storytelling centered around the collection of cursed books known as Phantom Books.
The character designs and visual direction were crafted to evoke a sense of early 20th-century European sophistication mixed with occult themes. The series received attention for its meticulous art style and focus on the relationship between the protagonist, Huey, and his partner, Dalian. While it was praised for its unique visual presentation and literary inspirations, it remains a distinct, niche entry in Gainax’s extensive catalog, noted for its melancholic tone and dedication to its specific period-piece setting.
