Where it came from
The Prince of Tennis II: Hyotei vs. Rikkai Game of Future was released in 2021 as a two-part original net animation project. It serves as a narrative bridge in the long-running franchise, specifically focusing on an exhibition match between the powerhouse academies of Hyotei and Rikkai, which does not appear in the original manga series. This project was developed to satisfy fan demand for new character interactions following the conclusion of the national tournament arc.
Produced by Studio KAI under the direction of Keiichiro Kawaguchi, the project aimed to revitalize the series' visual aesthetic while maintaining the intense, hyper-stylized sports action characteristic of the franchise. By focusing on these two popular schools, the creators provided deeper character studies for figures like Keigo Atobe and Seiichi Yukimura. The reception was generally favorable among the franchise's dedicated fanbase, who appreciated the opportunity to see these high-tier rivals compete in a specialized, non-canonical setting.
