The Princess of Yoshino

The Princess of Yoshino was produced by Maru Production as a short-form original net animation, or ONA, intended to showcase the studio's capacity for blending traditional Japanese aesthetics with contemporary digital animation techniques. Released during a period of experimentation for the studio, the project sought to translate the ephemeral beauty of the Yoshino cherry blossoms into a narrative medium, focusing on atmospheric storytelling rather than conventional long-form plotting.

The visual direction was overseen by the studio's internal design team, who prioritized a muted color palette to evoke the nostalgia of the Heian period. Critics at the time of its release noted the project's ambitious lighting effects and minimalist sound design, which helped it stand out within the saturated ONA market. While the title remained a niche interest for enthusiasts of experimental animation, it earned respect for its commitment to technical craftsmanship and its departure from typical character-heavy genre tropes.
