The☆Doraemons: Mystery X'mas Daisakusen

Released in 1996, The☆Doraemons: Mystery X'mas Daisakusen is a short film produced by Shin-Ei Animation as part of the long-running Doraemon franchise. It serves as an entry in The☆Doraemons spin-off series, which focuses on the adventures of Doraemon and his classmates from the Robot School, each representing a different country. This specific short was created to coincide with the holiday season and was typically screened in Japanese theaters alongside main feature-length Doraemon films, functioning as a festive, lighter-toned companion piece for younger audiences.

The production design reflects the aesthetic established in the mid-1990s for the Doraemon cinematic universe, emphasizing character-driven slapstick and ensemble interactions. The creative team aimed to showcase the distinct cultural gimmicks and abilities of the seven members of the Doraemons, relying on the established character tropes defined by Hiroshi Fujimoto and Motoo Abiko. The film was received as a standard but charming holiday treat, solidifying the popularity of the spin-off cast during a peak era for the franchise’s theatrical expansion.
