Where it came from
Released in 1997 as a theatrical short to accompany the Doraemon feature film, The Doraemons: Kaitou Dorapin Nazo no Chousenjou! serves as a spin-off expansion of the beloved Doraemon franchise. The film focuses on the titular ensemble known as 'The Doraemons,' a group of robot cats from different countries who attended the Robot School together, establishing a broader, global narrative for the series beyond the central friendship of Nobita and Doraemon.
The film was directed by Hiroshi Nishikiori, who sought to capture the adventurous spirit of the series by introducing a new antagonist, the phantom thief Dorapin. The design of the characters maintains the classic Fujiko F. Fujio aesthetic while incorporating localized cultural motifs for each member of the team. Upon its release, it was well-received by younger audiences, solidifying the popularity of The Doraemons as a recurring sub-series within the larger franchise canon.
