Where it came from
Thermae Romae: Kodai Romajin ga Uchuu e was released in 2012 as a special installment tied to the broader Thermae Romae franchise, which gained significant popularity through Mari Yamazaki's original manga. Produced by studio DLE, the project utilizes their signature Flash-animation style, which was chosen to lean into the surreal and comedic nature of the narrative involving a Roman architect transported through time to modern Japan.
This specific special episode expands upon the franchise's absurdist premise, placing the protagonist, Lucius Modestus, in even more fantastical situations. The creative direction aimed to blend historical Roman sensibilities with contemporary Japanese pop culture tropes, maintaining the series' reputation for lighthearted satire. While the feature-length live-action adaptations received substantial mainstream attention, this DLE production remains a niche highlight for fans of the manga's unique visual humor and historical fish-out-of-water storytelling.
