Where it came from
Thunderbolt Fantasy Sword Seekers 2 was released in 2018 as the highly anticipated second season of the wuxia puppet series collaboration between Japanese developer Nitroplus and Taiwanese puppet production company Pili International Multimedia. The series emerged from a unique cross-cultural endeavor to merge traditional Taiwanese glove puppetry, or budaixi, with the narrative sensibilities of Japanese anime, specifically the writing style of Gen Urobuchi.
The design of the series centers on the ornate, large-scale puppets, which are engineered for fluid combat sequences that mimic live-action martial arts films. Urobuchi, known for his work on series like Puella Magi Madoka Magica, served as the primary scriptwriter and creator, aiming to bring a high-stakes, character-driven fantasy narrative to the intricate puppetry format. The production was well-received by audiences for its technical craftsmanship and its ability to modernize a traditional performance art through cinematic pacing and complex character development.
